⚠️ Never stop Intuniv/guanfacine suddenly: always taper with prescriber guidance. Abrupt discontinuation can cause rebound effects. Most notable early effect is sedation: usually improves after 2–4 weeks.
What helps
- Taking Intuniv in the evening means sedation peaks overnight rather than during the day
- Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects your alertness
- Drowsiness usually improves significantly after 2–4 weeks as your body adjusts
- Do not drink alcohol alongside Intuniv; it significantly increases sedation
DiscussIf daytime sedation affects work, school, or safety: discuss dose timing with your prescriber.
What helps
- Rise slowly from sitting or lying positions: pause before standing fully
- Stay well hydrated, especially in warm weather or after exercise
- Avoid prolonged standing in hot environments
WatchFainting, severe dizziness, or feeling faint on standing: sit or lie down and contact your prescriber. Do not drive if dizzy.
What helps
- A modest reduction in heart rate is an expected pharmacological effect
- Your prescriber will check your pulse at every review
WatchA markedly slow, very irregular, or unusually prominent heartbeat should be assessed by your prescriber promptly.
What helps
- Sip water regularly throughout the day
- Sugar-free gum or mints can help stimulate saliva
ExpectedVery manageable with hydration.
What helps
- Maintain good fluid and fibre intake
- Regular physical activity supports gut motility
ExpectedUsually manageable with dietary adjustments.
What helps
- Take Intuniv with food; this reduces nausea significantly
- Taking in the evening rather than morning can also reduce daytime nausea
ExpectedFood consistently reduces nausea with guanfacine.
What helps
- Hydration helps: guanfacine lowers blood pressure slightly, and good fluid intake supports this
- Paracetamol is safe alongside Intuniv
ExpectedEarly headaches are common as your body adjusts to the blood pressure effects of guanfacine.
What helps
- Take Intuniv at the same time each day: consistency matters
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible (same day); skip if almost time for your next dose
- Never double-dose to catch up
WatchNever stop Intuniv suddenly: always taper with your prescriber's guidance. Abrupt stopping can cause rebound effects.

- Never stop Intuniv suddenly without prescriber guidance: abrupt discontinuation can cause rebound blood pressure effects. Always taper gradually
- Fainting or syncope: if you lose consciousness or come close to fainting, seek medical assessment the same day
- Alcohol interaction: alcohol significantly increases Intuniv's sedative effects: avoid while taking this medication
- Severe drowsiness affecting driving or operating machinery: contact your prescriber to discuss dose timing adjustment
